In a recent tweet from user XpeaGPU, as reported by Videocardz, it appears as though the “full” AD102 from Nvidia has been tested in Remedy Entertainment’s 2019 release Control. If true, the performance from this Ada Lovelace card shows that the game runs at 160+ fps in 4K with ray tracing on. A post beneath this from user hms1193 says that, on average, this upcoming RTX 4000 card is more than twice as fast as the 3090. It’s not clear exactly which GPU was being tested in the game, but Techpowerup says that the AD102 chip is likely to be used in the 4080 Ti, 4090, and 4090 Ti.

Of course, without any screenshots or further evidence, there’s only really XpeaGPU’s word to go off. Having said that, it’s already been speculated that Nvidia’s RTX 4090 could be twice as fast as the 3090. If these rumors are true, then the next flagship release from team green could see significant performance increases when compared to even the high-end Ampere range. These latest developments suggest that it could even be somewhat faster still, but there’s been no official confirmation on this so grains of salt are recommended for now.
It does feel as though competition is starting to hot up, especially among the two big champs of the industry. AMD says its RDNA 3 could be more efficient than Nvidia’s architecture, so it feels like there’s everything to play for at the moment. Of course, neither of these tech giants are likely to be too worried about the new combatants in the arena.
While Intel is preparing to launch its Arc desktop GPUs, it seems as though it’s going to be left behind as this range seems to conform to current gen only. In which case, Nvidia and AMD only have each other to worry about, and no doubt as the weeks go by, there will be more leaks about what each upcoming hardware may be capable of.
